Teams 14-18: building the future of competition BBQ
In 2025, Smokin' on the Rio added a dedicated High School track so young pitmasters can compete independently against other schools — and against the national contenders. The program continues and expands for the 2027 event.
Who can enter
- Teams of 4–5 students enrolled in grades 9th – 12th
- A District Employee or High School staff member (with a high school email address) must be in charge of the team and travel with them under ISD rules
Where you'll cook
All High School team campsites are in a designated area west of the main entrance. High School teams are not required to stay the night.
Important rules for High School teams
- Coaches, mentors, other adults, and non-team members are not allowed to touch meat, spices, marinades, cooking equipment, or pits.
- Alcohol is not permitted at any time. This includes being used in the recipe or any product. Any High School team member found consuming or possessing alcohol during the event will be disqualified.
- Smokin' on the Rio is sanctioned by the Champions Barbecue Alliance (CBA). All CBA rules apply in addition to Smokin' on the Rio rules and the High School rules above.
- Teams are responsible for knowing the turn-in times for each competition.
- Campsite cleanup is required before awards — trash bagged, no ashes or coals in the cans or left behind.
